Tantalus Estate Vineyards & Winery

Closed for renovations until September 2017

The Estate
Tantalus Estate sits on eight hectares of free-draining sandy soil over weathered clay and rock, in the heart of Waiheke’s wine growing country. Our aim is to produce dense, complex Bordeaux and Rhone-style reds that will age beautifully.

Our Estate in the Onetangi Valley includes 5.3 hectares of vineyards, a winery, a craft brewery and an expansive, light-filled restaurant with a seasonal menu built around fresh, local produce.
The Venue
Our newly renovated iconic winery opened in September 2016. The planning and design was masterminded by Cheshire Architects and actualized by WG de Gruchy. Situated amongst the vines, our indoor and outdoor dining areas flow through to the Cellar Door, providing comfortable and diverse experiences for our guests. Enjoy hand-crafted wine and beer tastings while gazing down into our state of the art brewery and out across the vines.
Our Location
Tantalus Estate is a premium winegrower situated in the heart of the Onetangi Valley on Waiheke Island. The estate is situated amongst other reputable wineries within walking distance making the valley a great destination to spend the day. A part of Auckland’s Gulf Islands, Waiheke Island is internationally recognised as an iconic wine growing region in New Zealand and is accredited with numerous wine awards and accolades.

Écluse: Reserve 2014.
This deep garnet Cabernet-dominant blend opens with aromas of dark berries and fresh violets. The palate reveals blackcurrant and black cherry notes, underpinned by dried herbs, fresh mint, toast and tar. The Écluse is a muscular wine with tremendous structure, grippy tannins and sustained length. Cellar for 10+ years.

Évoque: Reserve 2014.
An outstanding example of a merlot-dominant blend: soft, supple and full bodied. Sweet black cherry, red berries and chocolate notes prevail, with hints of wild herbs and tobacco in the background. Silky tannins and a long, persistent finish complete the story. Cellar for 10+ years.

Voilé: Reserve 2014.
Syrah grapes flourished during vintage 2014. The hot dry, warm conditions allowed the Syrah to fully ripen, with skins slowly wrinkling as harvest neared, concentrating flavours and promising great things to come. And so it proved: The Voilé Reserve 2014 is a deep garnet-purple wine bursting with a nose that releases aromas of violets and sandalwood. The palate displays ripe blackberry, bitter chocolate, cassis, liquorice and cedar, complemented by a velvety tannic structure and great length. This wine will reward long term cellaring.
